The CenTre Neonatal Transport team transfers poorly babies across the 14 maternity hospitals in the Midlands. The team transports the most poorly babies to specialist neonatal intensive care units in Leicester, Nottingham and Coventry and, when the babies are well enough to return, transports the babies back to their local hospital.

Leicester Hospitals Charity Little Lives Big Journeys appeal, established in 2014, aims to raise money to improve the CenTre Neonatal Transport Service and the quality of care the team can give to our babies and their families
The difference the Little Lives Big Journeys appeal has already made

  • Purchased specialist cooling equipment which helps to protect the brains of babies who may have suffered from a lack of oxygen around the time they were being born. This means that we can now start this critical treatment as soon as the transport team reaches the baby.
  • Purchased specialist hearing protection for our babies to wear during their journey in our ambulances
  • Purchase two machines to measure levels of carbon dioxide in babies blood so we can ensure they are kept within normal limits
  • Purchased breathing equipment so that we can transfer babies closer to home sooner

The CenTre team would not be able to offer any of this without your support and for that we are extremely grateful.
Little Lives Big Journeys is an on-going appeal and you can continue to help ensure that the most poorly babies born in the Midlands receive the best possible care. The current focus for the appeal is on improving the respiratory support for babies. We are aiming to raise £60,000 to purchase equipment which will allow the delivery of a gas called Nitric Oxide. This gas will help the sickest babies when they are having difficulty getting adequate oxygen into their lungs.

By supporting this appeal you can help us to continually improve and provide care for our babies during transport that is equivalent to the care they receive in our hospital neonatal intensive care units.
