The ‘Leicester Baby Loss Appeal’ was launched in December 2013 to create peaceful and sensitive settings for the 200 families a year who experience still birth.

Donations to the appeal funded 6 rooms in total, 3 for the Maternity Department at the Leicester General Hospital (LGH) and 3 for the same at the Leicester Royal Infirmary (LRI). Each site has a dedicated bereavement delivery suite out of the way from the rest of the busy labour ward with its own bathroom and nursery. There is an overnight stay room at each hospital for mums and their families who need to stay in for further monitoring post birth – these rooms are outside the labour wards but close enough for maternity staff to continue their excellent bereavement care. There are also 2 quiet rooms, one at each site to share bad news. All of the rooms have been designed with a dandelion theme creating a comfortable and peaceful home from home space

To date the appeal has raised nearly £300,000 thanks to huge support from our generous donors, hospital staff and a number of groups and companies from Leicestershire. The appeal was also awarded a grant of £161,000 from the Department of Health. Thanks to your continued support for this appeal the 3 parent rooms and bathrooms on the Neonatal ward at LGH have been upgraded, as well as the parent and visitors lounge on the unit. These areas are used by parents who experience difficulties with the birth of their baby.

We still need your help

Since completing the work mentioned above Leicester Hospitals Charity has been supporting the antenatal clinics by improving the facilities for ladies with identified fetal abnormalities.  A special room has been created at the LRI to house a new scanning machine and we are working on plans to improve the waiting area

We cannot take away all the stress and pain for those facing difficulties during pregnancy or child birth but with your support we can offer a better environment that is peaceful and comfortable.
